Each spring, millions of Americans brace for the itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and congestion that come with seasonal allergies. While antihistamines and nasal sprays offer temporary relief, many people are searching for natural allergy relief—something gentle, effective, and aligned with the body's healing response.

That's where homeopathic remedies for allergies shine. Homeopathy can help ease acute allergy symptoms like hay fever, and this article will cover some of the most commonly prescribed remedies so you can try it for yourself!

What Is Homeopathy—and How Can It Help with Allergies?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on the principle of “like cures like.” In other words, a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person can—when highly diluted—help relieve those same symptoms in someone experiencing them.

Homeopathic remedies work by gently stimulating your body’s own healing and detoxification mechanisms. When it comes to homeopathic allergy treatment, the goal is not to suppress symptoms, but to nudge your body back toward balance.

Common Homeopathic Remedies for Seasonal Allergies

Each person’s allergic response is unique, which is why homeopathy doesn’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution. Below are some of the most commonly recommended homeopathic remedies for hay fever and acute allergies:

Allium cepa

  • Best for: Profuse, watery nasal discharge that burns the upper lip and can feel like mucus is “dripping like a faucet;” sneezing and red, irritated eyes.

  • Other clues: Worse in warm rooms, better in fresh air; left-side is worse

  • Potency: 6C or 30C, 2–3 times per day during acute symptoms.

  • Pro-tip: Allium has burning nasal discharge, whereas Euphrasia has burning eyes

Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright)

  • Best for: Intense eye symptoms—burning, itching, watering, irritation

  • Other clues: Bland nasal discharge, but acrid eye discharge. Frequent blinking.

  • Potency: 6C or 30C, 2–3 times per day.

  • Pro-tip: Allium has burning nasal discharge, whereas Euphrasia has burning eyes

Pulsatilla

  • Best for: bland and watery nasal discharge; terrible itching and watering of the eyes that improve with cold applications or in the air conditioning

  • Other clues: Symptoms improve in cool, open air and worse when out in the sunlight for too long; emotionally sensitive and seeks comfort; changeable symptoms

  • Potency: 30C, 1–2 times daily.

Arsenicum album

  • Best for: Burning nasal discharge with anxiety, restlessness, and frequent sneezing; right sided nasal congestion

  • Other clues: Feels better with warmth and sips of warm drinks. Symptoms often worse at night, especially after midnight.

  • Potency: 6C or 30C, 2–3 times per day.

Natrum muriaticum

  • Best for: Sneezing fits, clear runny nose, and nasal congestion that alternates sides; sometimes ineffective sneezing (urge to sneeze but then you can't)

  • Other clues: Symptoms worsen with sunlight, heat, or emotional stress. Craves salt. Often reserved, sensitive, and dislikes consolation; chapped lips with cracks at corners of mouth

  • Potency: 6C or 30C, 1–2 times daily during flare-ups.

Sabadilla

  • Best for: sudden, uncontrollable bursts of sneezing; constantly itchy nose, and a tickling sensation in the throat; sneezes provoke tears

  • Other clues: Symptoms triggered by the smell of flowers or pollen. Often has watery eyes and nasal discharge. May feel chilly. Better with warm drinks

  • Potency: 6C or 30C, 2–3 times daily during acute episodes.

Histaminum

If you've browsed the health stores looking for allergy remedies, you've no doubt come across or have already tried histaminum hydrochloricum.

This is a more broad acting remedy that some practitioners prescribe when the allergy symptoms are vague and don't fit any of the above profiles.

Consider Histaminum when allergies flare from pollen, dust, mold, or pet dander, especially when symptoms shift quickly or appear suddenly.

How to Use Homeopathic Remedies for Allergies

Choose a remedy that matches your unique symptom profile as closely as possible.

Use a low potency (like 6C or 30C) for acute symptoms and repeat 2–3 times daily as needed.

Stop once symptoms improve significantly or change. If no improvement after 3 doses, consider switching remedies or consulting a naturopathic doctor (ND).

Homeopathy is incredibly safe and works well alongside other therapies. But if you experience any unwanted effects, you should discontinue and speak with a doctor.

Homeopathy is not a substitute for pharmaceuticals like albuterol inhalers or steroids and should not be used as such.

Additional Natural Allergy Remedies to Support Healing

While homeopathic antihistamines can be helpful during an allergy flare, some people benefit from supporting their bodies with natural supplements and lifestyle practices.

  • Quercetin – A natural antioxidant that helps stabilize mast cells and reduce histamine release.

  • Vitamin C – Acts as a natural antihistamine and antioxidant.

  • Butterbur and stinging nettle – Herbs traditionally used to reduce nasal inflammation.

  • Saline nasal rinses – Help flush out pollen and reduce congestion.

  • HEPA filters and air purifiers – Reduce indoor allergen exposure and make the air feel cleaner!

When to Work with a Naturopathic Doctor

If your symptoms are chronic, worsening, or interfering with your quality of life, it may be time to seek deeper support.

As a naturopathic doctor, I help patients uncover the root causes of their allergies—whether it's immune imbalance, food sensitivities, or gut issues—and develop customized protocols using homeopathy, nutrition, and advanced testing.

Homeopathy can also be used for chronic conditions like anxiety, depression, fatigue, and many others!
